Summer in Utah means one thing: it's time to get outside. Whether you're towing a wakeboard boat to Bear Lake, loading jet skis for Utah Lake, or hitting Moab's trails on your side-by-side, the Beehive State's $9.5 billion outdoor recreation economy comes alive between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
But here's what too many Utahns discover after an accident: your homeowners insurance and auto policy almost certainly don't cover your recreational vehicles the way you think they do. And in 2026, there's a new enforcement mechanism that makes this even more urgent.

Utah's New 2026 Boating Insurance Enforcement
Starting January 1, 2026, Utah's Division of Outdoor Recreation launched a proactive enforcement initiative. Between April and October, uninsured motorboats will receive a compliance notice. Fail to provide proof of insurance, and your boat registration gets revoked.
If you own a motorboat with 50+ horsepower or a personal watercraft (jet ski, Sea-Doo, WaveRunner), you are legally required to carry liability insurance in Utah. The minimum requirements are: $25,000/$50,000 bodily injury, $15,000 property damage, or $65,000 combined single limit per accident.
Why 'My Homeowners Covers It' Is a Dangerous Assumption
This is the most common misconception we hear. Homeowners insurance may provide limited liability for small watercraft (canoes, kayaks) but typically excludes motorized watercraft over certain horsepower limits. Auto insurance covers your vehicle towing the trailer — not the boat, jet ski, or ATV on it. If your $45,000 wakeboard boat gets stolen from your driveway, your homeowners policy might cover it — but once it's on the water, you likely have zero liability protection without a standalone watercraft policy.
Boat & PWC Insurance: What It Costs
Watercraft insurance in Utah is surprisingly affordable thanks to freshwater-only conditions and seasonal riding. Entry-level jet skis cost $200-400/year, high-performance PWCs $350-800, pontoon boats $250-500, wakeboard boats $400-900, and fishing boats $200-450. A good watercraft policy covers liability, physical damage, uninsured boater protection, medical payments, fuel spill liability, and on-water towing assistance.
ATV, UTV & Side-by-Side Insurance in Utah
Street-legal ATVs/UTVs operated on public roads require liability insurance, same as any motor vehicle. Off-road only use doesn't legally require insurance — but consider this: you're riding your $18,000 side-by-side, flip on a trail, injure yourself and a passenger. Without insurance, you're looking at $18K+ in vehicle repairs and potentially $50K+ in medical bills. ATV/UTV policies typically cost $100-400 per year.
Utah's Boating Safety Reality Check
Utah is among the deadliest states for boaters nationally. The state averages 7 boating-related drownings per year (8 in 2024). Nearly half of all Utah boating accidents occur at Lake Powell, followed by Bear Lake, Willard Bay, and Utah Lake. 85% of open-water fatalities could have had different outcomes if victims wore life jackets.
Get the Right Coverage Before Summer Heats Up
Don't wait for that enforcement notice to show up. With Utah's new 2026 proactive compliance program running from April through October, now is the time to confirm your coverage. The cost of insuring your recreational vehicles is a fraction of what one uninsured accident could cost you. A jet ski policy for $25/month or an ATV policy for under $15/month is cheap peace of mind. Ready to protect your summer toys?
